After successfully avoiding well pretty much everything to do with BGT over the last few weeks I finally succumbed this week to the ‘avalanche’ of media hype and decided to watch the final last night.  Regrettably though I missed about half of it and only came on with a few acts to go.  I did see part of Susan Boyle’s performance  (which i’ve got to say upfront moved me completely to sheer and utter … boredom) as well as the dance group Diversity.

Although I missed that kid Shaheen’s performance I was kindof hoping he would win as boy he could sing.  Susan Boyle just hadn’t done it for me at all.  Older chuch volunteer proves she can sing – hoh hum.  When I saw Diversity I was really impressed but did not think they would be able to beat the Boyle juggernaut.  Oh and just to add I really liked the saxophonist guy (seemed really nice) but seemed very Kenny G in his style.

So for Diversity to win was absolutely fantastic.  Whether they were helped by Boyle’s meltdowns earlier in the week is debatable but regardless of that they were fantastic.  Make no mistake I think some street dance I have seen is aggressively sexual and completely rubbish but I thought this group were creative, fresh and utterly brilliant.  I was really impressed with the movie references (I got Spiderman and the obvious Superman) and the sheer inventiveness of their moves (the three red buttons bit) and therefore in retrospect I think they were deserved winners.

I think in summary it was a choice between a slightly stuffy Old Britain Talent Show and a new and modern Young Britain Talent Show.  Although Diversity may not go on to make the money Susan Boyle is going to make (most of it will come from people paying her NOT to do that bloody wiggle dance she does) I hope they will have as much success as is possible.

Now can the papers and news websites stop going on about how she came second?
