Kurume Kasuri Gakubuchi

In order to get inspiration I decided to use a book called Japanese Quilt Blocks by Susan Briscoe. ??I had scene some minimalist Japanese designs at a Birmingham show a year or two ago and I liked the consistency and lack of 'fuss' in them.

After playing around with design 14 (Kurume Kasuri Musubi – Knot) for a bit (see earlier email to my mother) I eventually found design number 17 (Kurume Kasuri Gakubuchi – Frame) which when I put into Sketchup I found that it repeated very nicely in a circle. ??The images below show my progression from a single circle to two viewed side on to an oblique view which I decided very quickly would be my final design. ??Regrettably I forgot to take screenshots of the construction process in sketchup midway through. ??Damn. ??I will do so when I do wireframes for laying out the pattern of the quilt.

The Journey Begins

This blog will hopefully form a record of everything which I do to get a simple idea (a 3d quilt) into reality and submitted to the Birmingham quilt festival.

I will update it with emails I send to my mother who is a long term quilter as well as images from the design process.

This is a wow: immediately I thought a fabric construction, then a mirror image, n-s, then e-w: it is stunning!
